How do you organize your local PDF paper library?
After several years of research, my local PDF folder has grown chaotic. File naming, folder structures and metadata are all messy. What file‑system conventions keep your offline paper collection maintainable?

I use consistent filename format: Year‑Author‑Title‑Journal.pdf for every downloaded paper.

Group top‑level folders by broad research themes, avoid deep nested sub‑folders.

Always pair local files with reference manager entries, never manage PDFs completely separately.

I delete duplicate PDFs regularly; duplicates pop up constantly when you download from different sources.

Cloud sync is helpful, but be careful with large PDF libraries hitting storage limits.

Don’t rely purely on folder browsing; use the reference manager search as your primary entry point.
